National Physical Laboratory

National Physical Laboratory

National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK’s National Metrology Institute, providing the measurement capability that underpins the UK's prosperity and quality of life. Our world-leading science experts support the emergence of a hydrogen economy and deployment of carbon capture schemes, by developing the underpinning frameworks needed to safely and cost-effectively accelerate the development and deployment of technologies. Our work feeds into quality, regulatory and market frameworks and supports original equipment manufacturers and supply chains. We develop the measurement standards and test methods needed to modify existing, or develop new, technical standards. Vital for innovation and highly utilised by UK firms, technical standards account for significant increases in productivity and help UK companies compete in a global market. Our current work focuses across several scientific themes, including gas composition and quality, emission detection and quantification, metal, polymer and composite materials assurance, electrochemical hydrogen technologies and carbon capture materials.
