The port of Wilhelmshaven, now mainly known for JadeWeserPort, Germany's only deep-water port, has a history dating back to 1869 as a naval base. The idea for a deep-water container port was conceived in the 1990s, and after years of planning, JadeWeserPort opened in 2012. Today, it is an important hub for container, bulk and oil transhipment and a central hub for German energy supply. With the ENERGY HUB Port of Wilhelmshaven, an association of over 40 companies from the energy sector, a strong initiative has been established with the aim of establishing Wilhelmshaven as Germany's and Europe's hub for renewable energies and CCS.
